How does a peristaltic pump work?
date: 2024-09-18

Peristaltic pump, also known as roller pump, is a positive displacement pump that can be used to pump various fluids. The peristaltic pump is mainly composed of a peristaltic pump head, a peristaltic pump driver, and a peristaltic pump hose. The peristaltic pump was patented in 1855 for well pumps, and later used for blood transfusion and other medical and health aspects. With the gradual improvement of the peristaltic pump, it is now widely used in the construction industry, paper industry, food industry and mining industry.

The peristaltic pump has been widely used due to its unique structure, so how does the peristaltic pump work?

A peristaltic pump is a volumetric pump used to pump various liquids. The liquid is contained in a hose or pipe in the pump housing. The pumping process of a peristaltic pump can be called peristaltic motion, which is based on alternate compression and release operations of hoses and pipes, suction of raw materials, and forced discharge of pump products.

When an object enters the hose, the rolling guide shoe or guide wheel will move along the hose, creating a temporary seal between the suction end and the discharge end of the pump. This creates a vacuum working environment for the pumped objects, avoiding contact with the outside world. When the rotor rotates, the pressure generated will force the object to move along the hose or pipe, and the object will leave the pump body and enter the discharge line. When the pressure is released, the hose or pipe will create a vacuum, sucking objects into the suction end of the pump, this is the self-priming mechanism.

The feature of the peristaltic pump is to have the flexible hose; the hose can pump objects in the form of solid, liquid, gas, etc. When highly corrosive objects enter the peristaltic pump, the corrosive objects only contact with the hose, don’t contact other parts of the peristaltic pump .So the hose is the only one part that need to be replaced. It can be said that the hose is the core part of the peristaltic pump, and the use time of the hose pump determines the service life of the peristaltic pump.

The flow rate of the peristaltic pump is proportional to the flow rate, which is suitable for quantitative pumping. For example, the addition of chemicals in the laboratory is suitable for pumping with a peristaltic pump to avoid the waste of excess drugs.

The volume of a peristaltic pump depends on the speed of the pump head, the inner diameter of the pump tube, and the geometric characteristics of the rotor. The larger the inner diameter of the pump tube, the more objects pumped. So when we can choose the right hose size according to the pumped object.
